Popular CitiesWhere are you planning to move to?
With a population of nearly 8 million and around 40,000 Britons living there, Switzerland is increasingly a popular destination for expats seeking a comfortable lifestyle. With its often-low tax rates, a stable economy, low crime rates and a high standard of living, Switzerland offers a safe multicultural lifestyle, which attracts highly skilled employees in the technology, pharmacology and biotechnology industries.
If moving to Switzerland, you will find excellent travel and transport systems, as well as an excellent private health service. Expatriates with children will find the education system strikingly different to the UK, with most children in Switzerland going to state schools. Free and compulsory education starts at seven with the elementary school – volksschule – followed by the gymnasium – secondary school. Many schools have different emphases with some concentrating on a narrow set of subjects, obtaining a eidgenossische matura – the graduation diploma.
Though house prices and the cost of living vary enormously within Switzerland, it is nevertheless an expensive country to move to and live in.
Made up of 26 member states known as “Cantons” Switzerland is very much a confederation of small states, each having its own constitution, legislature, government and courts. The country has four national languages which are: German, French, Italian and Romansh. However, German and French are by far the most popular languages spoken in Switzerland.
